Virtual Machine

A computer simulated in software that runs inside a real one, so one machine can act as several.

Like a building divided into separate apartments: they share the foundations, and each has its own front door.

How it works

  • A host machine runs software that creates virtual computers.
  • Each one has its own operating system and files.
  • A server can run several for different jobs.
  • Backups can capture the whole machine as a single file.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the firewall and switch around it, and Unified Backups provides an independent copy of the data.

  • A small office runs its accounting server as a virtual machine.
  • A developer tests software in a throwaway one.
  • A firm moves a server into the cloud as a virtual machine.

A question owners ask

Is a virtual server different from a cloud server?

They are the same idea. A cloud server runs on someone else's hardware.
