ACL

Access Control List

A list attached to a file, folder or network device that states who is allowed to use it.

Like the guest list at a venue door: if your name is not on it, you do not get in.

How it works

  • Each entry says who and what they may do, such as read or edit.
  • Files, folders and firewall rules all use lists like this.
  • Lists grow messy over time and need a review.
  • Giving access to groups instead of individuals keeps them short.

How WILDCARD handles it

Cloud covers permissions in your workspace, and Network covers the firewall rules on the network side.

  • A firm checks who can open the payroll folder.
  • An office tightens a firewall list to allow only one printer address.
  • A shop removes a former employee from a shared drive.

A question owners ask

How often should I review who has access?

At least twice a year, and any time someone leaves or changes roles.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
