ARP

Address Resolution Protocol

How devices on one network discover which hardware address belongs to which network address.

Like calling out who is in Room 12 down an office hallway and hearing the right person answer.

How it works

  • A device broadcasts a question to the local network.
  • The owner of the address replies.
  • Devices keep the answer in a short list.
  • Attackers can send false replies to intercept traffic.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed switches that can limit this kind of trick.

  • A computer finds a printer on the same network.
  • A security tool flags two devices claiming one address.
  • A switch setting blocks false replies.

A question owners ask

Does it work across the internet?

No. It works only inside one local network.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
