TKIP

Temporal Key Integrity Protocol

An older Wi-Fi scrambling method that has been replaced because it is weak.

Like a patched-up old lock that was only meant as a stopgap.

How it works

  • It was created to improve the first Wi-Fi security without new hardware.
  • Weaknesses were later found.
  • Newer routers use AES instead.
  • Turning it off may stop very old devices from connecting.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A small office had one old printer that only worked with the old Wi-Fi mode. That setting weakened the whole network until the printer was replaced.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • A router offers it in a compatibility mode.
  • A security scan flags it.
  • An old scanner needs it to connect.

A question owners ask

Should I turn it off?

Yes, unless an old device needs it. Replacing that device is better than weakening the network.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
