CHAP

Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol

A sign-in method where the server sends a puzzle and the user's device answers it, so the password never travels.

Like a guard who asks a question only someone with the secret can answer, and asks a new one each time.

How it works

  • The server sends a random challenge.
  • The device answers using the secret.
  • The server checks the answer.
  • Repeated during the session.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the firewall and remote-access settings where such methods are chosen.

  • An older link uses it.
  • A router offers it in the settings.
  • An audit recommends a newer method.

A question owners ask

Is it secure?

It is better than sending a password, though newer methods are stronger.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
