SHA

Secure Hashing Algorithm

A method that turns any file into a short fingerprint, so you can tell whether it has been changed.

Like a wax stamp unique to a document: change one word and the stamp looks completely different.

How it works

  • The fingerprint is fixed in length.
  • Small changes in a file produce a different one.
  • It cannot be reversed to recover the file.
  • Used for downloads, signatures and password storage.
  • A software vendor publishes a fingerprint for a download.
  • A website stores password fingerprints in place of the passwords.
  • A backup tool checks files are intact.

A question owners ask

Why would I check one?

To confirm a download was not altered on the way.
