AES-256

Advanced Encryption Standards 256-bit

The strongest common setting of the standard scrambling method, using a very long key.

Like the same lock fitted with the longest key anyone makes.

How it works

  • The 256 is the key length in bits.
  • It is used for sensitive data and long-term storage.
  • Brute forcing it is not practical with current computers.
  • Weak passwords and lost keys are the real risks.

How WILDCARD handles it

Cloud covers the Microsoft 365 or Google settings that protect your data.

  • A cloud service lists it in its security page.
  • A backup is stored encrypted with it.
  • A drive encryption tool uses it.

A question owners ask

Is 256 better than 128?

Longer is stronger on paper, but 128 is already very strong. Choose either over nothing.
