APT

Advanced Persistent Threat

A patient, well-funded attacker who breaks into a network and stays hidden for months.

Like a burglar who copies a key, visits the building quietly night after night and never takes anything obvious.

How it works

  • The attacker aims at a specific target, often for data or leverage.
  • They move slowly to avoid alarms.
  • Typical goals are theft of secrets or access to bigger targets through a supplier.
  • Small firms are sometimes the way in to a larger client.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A five-person engineering subcontractor to a larger firm was breached quietly. The attacker used its trusted email to send the larger firm a booby-trapped drawing.

How WILDCARD handles it

Workstation Defender watches device behaviour for attacks, and Identity Monitor watches every login and session and shuts down suspicious activity automatically.

  • A supplier is told by a client to meet higher security standards.
  • An owner learns a vendor was breached and checks for strange logins.
  • A firm reviews admin accounts for unusual activity.

A question owners ask

Why would an attacker want a small business?

As a stepping stone to bigger clients or as an easy source of data.
