Rule-based Access Control

A way of granting access by fixed rules, such as only from the office, or only during work hours.

Like a door that opens by the clock and by location: the same badge works at nine in the morning at the front desk and stays dead at midnight.

How it works

  • An administrator writes rules that test conditions such as time, place and device.
  • The system applies the rules to everyone the same way.
  • It differs from the role-based kind, which grants access by job title.
  • Rules can be tightened without touching each person's account.

How WILDCARD handles it

Cloud covers sign-in and permission settings in your Microsoft 365 or Google workspace, where this kind of rule is applied.

  • Payroll opens only from the office network during business hours.
  • A file share blocks logins from outside the country.
  • An admin portal allows access only from approved devices.

A question owners ask

Is this the same as role-based access control?

No. The role-based kind asks who you are in the company. The rule-based kind asks when, where and how you are connecting. Many systems use both.

Something here sounds like your problem?
