Message Digest 5

An older method for turning a file into a short fingerprint that is now too weak for security.

Like an old fingerprint scanner that can be fooled with a fake print.

How it works

  • It produces a short code that changes if the file changes.
  • Attackers can create two different files with the same code.
  • It is still used for simple checks that a download copied correctly.
  • Modern tools use SHA-256 or stronger.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A company relied on a short code to confirm a downloaded installer was genuine. An attacker swapped in a modified file with a matching code.

  • A file site lists an old code beside a download.
  • A security audit flags a system storing passwords with it.
  • A technician uses it to confirm a backup copied fully.

A question owners ask

Is it safe to use?

For checking a file copied without errors, yes. For anything security related, such as passwords, no.
