MAC

Media Access Control address

The permanent hardware serial number of a device's network connection.

Like the serial number stamped on a piece of equipment: it stays with the device wherever it is plugged in.

How it works

  • Every network card, wired or Wi-Fi, has one.
  • Routers use it to tell devices apart, for example to always give the printer the same address.
  • It is visible to others on the same network, and some phones randomise it for privacy.
  • It is a label for identification and offers no security on its own.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A five-person print shop's network printer kept getting a different IP each day, so the office computers lost it every morning. Reserving its address by MAC fixed a problem that had cost ten minutes a day for a year.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the switch and firewall where MAC addresses matter: reserving addresses for printers and servers, and seeing which devices are actually on your network.

  • A dental office reserves fixed addresses for the x-ray sensor PC and the printer by MAC.
  • A law firm wants a list of every device that has joined the office network this month.
  • A retailer's point-of-sale terminal must keep the same address or the back office loses it.

Example scenario: A small accounting firm noticed an unknown device on their network list. The MAC's manufacturer prefix showed a smart TV brand. It was a new boardroom screen someone had joined to the staff Wi-Fi. It was moved to the guest network the same afternoon, where it belonged.

A question owners ask

Can I secure my Wi-Fi by only allowing known MAC addresses?

It keeps casual devices out, but a MAC is easy to copy and phones randomize theirs. Use a strong WPA3 password and a separate guest network instead, and treat MAC filtering as housekeeping.

  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
