WPA

Wi-Fi Protected Access

The security setting that scrambles your Wi-Fi traffic so people nearby cannot read it.

Like talking in a private language that only people holding the Wi-Fi password can understand.

How it works

  • Look for WPA2 or WPA3 in your router settings; WPA3 is the newest and strongest.
  • It encrypts everything between a device and the access point.
  • A short or guessable Wi-Fi password weakens it, whatever the version.
  • Older settings such as WEP or open Wi-Fi leave traffic readable.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A small office kept an old printer that only worked with an outdated Wi-Fi setting, and left the whole network on it. A neighbour in the car park could read the traffic.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the access points and the staff and guest Wi-Fi settings, including keeping encryption current.

  • A clinic checks that its Wi-Fi uses WPA2 or WPA3 and retires a device that cannot.
  • A retailer sets a long passphrase on staff Wi-Fi and a separate one for guests.
  • An office changes the Wi-Fi password after a contractor leaves.

A question owners ask

Which Wi-Fi security setting should I choose?

WPA3 if every device supports it, otherwise WPA2 with a long password. Avoid anything older.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
