SRTP

Secure Real-Time Protocol

In plain language

A secure version of the way voice and video are sent over the internet, which scrambles calls.

The metaphor

Like tamper-proof wrap around each piece of a phone call.

Going deeper

How it works

  • It adds scrambling and a check that nothing was altered.
  • It stops anyone in between from listening in.
  • The phone system and handset must both support it.
  • Key exchange is done separately.
In practice
  • A phone system encrypts calls with it.
  • A video meeting tool uses it.
  • A provider lists it in its specifications.

A question owners ask

Are my phone calls private?

That depends on the phone system. Ask your provider whether calls are encrypted.
