RTP

Real-time Transport Protocol

The way voice and video are sent in small pieces during a call over the internet.

Like a conveyor belt that carries each piece of a conversation in order during a call.

How it works

  • Each piece is numbered so it can be put back in order.
  • Late or missing pieces cause choppy audio.
  • It needs a steady connection.
  • The call setup travels separately.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A small office added video calls on the same line as its file backups. Calls broke up every night when backups ran, until the backups were moved to off-hours.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • A softphone sends voice with it.
  • A video meeting uses it to send your camera feed.
  • A technician checks packet loss on a call.

A question owners ask

Why do calls sound choppy?

Often because the connection is busy or unstable. Your IT provider can look at the network around the call.
