SE Linux

Security-enhanced Linux

An extra safety layer in Linux that limits what each program is allowed to do.

Like a rule book that gives each worker keys only to the rooms their job needs.

How it works

  • It sets rules for programs, files and users.
  • A hacked program can only do what its rule permits.
  • It is built into many Linux systems.
  • Turning it off is a common shortcut that weakens security.
  • A web server is limited to its own folder.
  • An administrator reads a log to see what was blocked.
  • A technician changes a rule to let a new program run.

A question owners ask

Should it be on?

Yes where it exists. Ask your provider whether it is turned on.
