PGP

Pretty Good Privacy

A method of locking email and files so only the person you meant can open them.

Like a padlock you hand out freely: anyone can snap it shut on a letter for you, and only you hold the key that opens it.

How it works

  • Each person has two keys, a public one you share and a private one you keep.
  • Anyone can lock a message with your public key.
  • Only your private key opens it.
  • It also signs messages to prove they came from you.
  • A journalist exchanges sensitive files with a source.
  • A security researcher signs an update.
  • A firm is asked by a partner to use it and is given the key instructions.

A question owners ask

Is it practical for a small office?

Rarely. Most owners choose a secure file link in Microsoft 365 or Google, which is easier.
