Password

A secret word or phrase that proves you are allowed to sign in.

Like the key to a room: it is only worth anything if it is hard to copy and you do not hand out spares.

How it works

  • Length matters more than tricks: a long phrase beats a short, complicated word.
  • Use a different one for every account.
  • Turn on MFA so a stolen password alone gets nobody in.
  • Changing a password on a schedule matters less than making it unique and strong.

How WILDCARD handles it

Password Manager creates and stores a unique password for every account, and Identity Monitor watches the logins that a stolen one would produce.

  • A consultancy moves from a shared spreadsheet of passwords to a vault.
  • A clinic bans the practice name followed by a year.
  • A bookkeeper turns on MFA for her bank and accounting software.

A question owners ask

How long should a password be? At least fourteen characters or a passphrase of four or more random words. Longer is better, and unique matters most.
