NAS

Network-Attached Storage

A box of hard drives on your network that holds shared files for everyone in the office.

Like a shared filing cabinet in the hallway: everyone can get to it, so it matters who has the key.

How it works

  • Holds files, sometimes backups.
  • Needs updates and a strong login.
  • A NAS is not a backup by itself, because ransomware can reach it.
  • Cloud storage is often easier.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the switch and firewall around it. Unified Backups gives an independent copy.

  • A studio stores projects on a NAS.
  • A clinic backs up to one.
  • A shop retires its NAS for the cloud.

A question owners ask

Is a NAS a backup? No on its own. Keep a copy somewhere an attacker on your network cannot reach.
