MDF

Main Distribution Frame

The main room in a building where the internet connection comes in and spreads out to the rest of the network.

Like the building's main fuse board, where everything connects and branches off.

How it works

  • The internet line, firewall and main switch usually live here.
  • Other closets on each floor connect back to it.
  • It needs power, cooling and a locked door.
  • Losing it means losing the whole building's network.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A dental practice kept its firewall, switch and server on a shelf behind the reception desk. A spilled drink short-circuited the power strip and shut the practice down.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • A small office uses one cabinet as its main room.
  • A clinic keeps the firewall and server in a locked closet.
  • A new office plans where the main room will sit.

A question owners ask

What should be in this room?

The firewall, main switch and any server, on a battery backup, behind a lock and clearly labelled.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
