LEAP

Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol

An old Cisco method for logging into Wi-Fi that is now considered weak.

Like an old padlock whose weak spot is well known to burglars.

How it works

  • It was one of the first ways of giving each user their own Wi-Fi login.
  • Its password check can be broken with common tools.
  • Modern methods replaced it.
  • It is worth turning off if you still see it.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A small office never changed its original access point settings. A security check showed the old login method was still enabled, so the Wi-Fi passwords could be captured and cracked.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • A scan flags an old access point with it enabled.
  • A switch to certificate logins replaces it.
  • An audit report lists it as outdated.

A question owners ask

What should I do if it shows up?

Ask your IT provider to switch to a stronger login method and disable this one.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
