KDC

Key Distribution Center

The server in a Windows network that checks your login once and hands out passes you use for everything else.

Like a ticket office that checks your ID once and sells passes valid for the day's rides.

How it works

  • In a Windows domain, the domain controller does this job.
  • You log in once, then get tickets for file shares, printers and apps.
  • The tickets expire after a set time.
  • If it is offline, people cannot get new tickets to reach shared resources.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A firm had a single domain controller in a back room. When it failed one morning, nobody could open shared folders until a replacement was built.

  • An employee logs in at 9 am and opens the file server without typing the password again.
  • A new laptop joins the domain and gets its tickets.
  • A shared printer asks the office server to confirm who is printing.

A question owners ask

Do I need to know this?

Only if you run your own Windows server. The useful question is whether there is a second one, so one failure does not stop everyone.
