IDF

Intermediate Distribution Frame

A wiring closet that connects the cables on one floor to the building's main network room.

Like a local junction box on each floor that feeds into the building's main fuse board.

How it works

  • Cables from desks and Wi-Fi access points end here.
  • A switch in the closet links them back to the main room.
  • Long buildings or multi-floor offices use several.
  • It needs power, cooling and a locked door.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

An office kept its network switch in an unlocked supply closet shared with the cleaners. A cable got unplugged during cleaning and half the floor lost its connection.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • A two-storey office has one closet per floor.
  • A clinic keeps its switch and patch panel in a locked cabinet.
  • A warehouse has a closet at the far end.

A question owners ask

Where should my network gear live?

In a locked, ventilated spot with its own power, labelled so a technician can trace each cable.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
