FTPS

Secured File Transfer Protocol

File transfer over a locked connection, the old FTP method with encryption added.

Like the same courier route as before, now with a locked case that only the recipient can open.

How it works

  • Wraps the old file transfer protocol in TLS.
  • Protects passwords and files on the way.
  • Needs extra firewall settings to work.
  • SFTP is a different method with a similar goal.
  • A supplier sends files to a client over a locked connection.
  • A scanner uploads to a server that requires encryption.
  • An old system moves from plain FTP to FTPS.

A question owners ask

How is it different from SFTP?

FTPS adds a lock to FTP. SFTP is built on SSH. Both protect the files; the setup differs.
