DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

The service that automatically gives each device on your network an address when it connects.

Like a hotel front desk handing out room numbers: each guest gets one for the stay, and the number goes back in the pool when they leave.

How it works

  • Your router or firewall usually runs it.
  • A device joins the network and asks for an address, and DHCP answers with one for a set time.
  • Printers and servers are often given a fixed address so they are easy to find.
  • Two devices claiming the same address cause odd dropouts.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A small studio added a second router to extend Wi-Fi. Both handed out addresses, and staff laptops kept losing the internet at random until one of them was switched off.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the firewall and switch where addressing is set up for your office.

  • A clinic reserves a fixed address for its label printer so it never moves.
  • An office finds two devices fighting over the same address after a new router was plugged in.
  • A shop sets a short lease time on guest Wi-Fi.

A question owners ask

Why does my printer keep disappearing from the network?

Often its address changed. A reserved address for the printer fixes that for good.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
