CBC

Cipher Block Chaining

A method of scrambling data in blocks where each block depends on the one before it.

Like a chain of locked boxes where each box's lock is set by the previous box, so repeating patterns do not show.

How it works

  • Each block is mixed with the one before.
  • A random starting value is used.
  • Used in older web and disk encryption.
  • Newer systems prefer other modes.
  • An older secure connection uses it.
  • A security scan recommends moving to a newer mode.
  • A disk encryption setting lists it.

A question owners ask

Is it safe?

Used correctly it was, but newer modes are preferred and your provider can update settings.
