VLSM

Variable Length Subnet Masking

A way of cutting an address range into network pieces of different sizes so nothing is wasted.

Like cutting a plot of land into lots of different sizes depending on what each needs.

How it works

  • Different parts of a network need different numbers of addresses.
  • It lets each get just enough.
  • It is used by network engineers.
  • Small offices rarely need it.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • An engineer gives a small link two addresses and an office hundreds.
  • A plan splits space across sites.
  • A student practises splitting a range.

A question owners ask

Do I need it?

Rarely. Your provider handles addressing for you.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
