USB

Universal Serial Bus

The common plug and port for connecting drives, keyboards, printers and phones to a computer.

Like a standard wall socket that fits many appliances: convenient, and anything plugged in gets power and access.

How it works

  • Memory sticks carry files and sometimes malware.
  • Unknown sticks found in a car park are a classic trap.
  • Some organisations block storage over USB entirely.
  • Charging from public ports can expose a phone, so carry your own plug.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A bookkeeper plugged in a branded memory stick left at a trade show. It carried malware that began stealing files from her computer.

How WILDCARD handles it

Workstation Defender watches for malicious behaviour on business computers, including what runs from a plugged-in stick.

  • A clinic blocks personal memory sticks on reception computers.
  • An office hands out encrypted drives for travel.
  • A staff member hands an unknown stick to IT instead of using it.

A question owners ask

Can I use a memory stick someone gave me?

Treat it as unsafe. Ask your IT provider to scan it or use a shared link instead.
