TACACS+

Terminal Access Controller Access Control System

A central server that decides who may log into network equipment and records what they do.

Like a key cabinet clerk who checks who you are, hands out only the keys you may use, and notes it down.

How it works

  • Administrators log in with their own accounts.
  • The server says which commands each may run.
  • Every action can be logged.
  • It is common in larger networks with many devices.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • An engineer logs into a switch with a personal account.
  • A company limits who can change firewall settings.
  • An audit asks who made a change.

A question owners ask

Do I need one?

Usually not for a small office. Larger networks use it.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
