SHTTP

Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol

An old, rarely used way of protecting individual web messages that lost out to HTTPS.

Like a rival postal standard that nobody adopted.

How it works

  • It protects single messages, one at a time.
  • HTTPS won out.
  • Almost no sites use it.
  • It is mostly of historical interest.
  • A glossary lists it next to HTTPS.
  • A textbook mentions it.
  • An old document names it.

A question owners ask

Do I need it?

No. HTTPS is what the web uses.
