PPTP

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol

A very old way of making a VPN that is no longer safe to use.

Like a lock whose key pattern is widely published.

How it works

  • It was built into early versions of Windows.
  • Its protection can be broken.
  • Newer VPN methods replaced it.
  • Turn it off if you find it.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

An office kept an old router VPN running for a former contractor. Attackers found the open port and guessed the password.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • An old firewall still offers it.
  • A security scan flags it.
  • A provider switches staff to a modern VPN.

A question owners ask

Should I still use it?

No. Ask your IT provider to move to a modern VPN.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
