Port Address Translation

The trick that lets many devices share one public internet address by giving each conversation a different number.

Like an office with one street address where each employee has a different extension.

How it works

  • Your router keeps a table of which device asked for what.
  • Replies are matched to the right device using port numbers.
  • It is why a whole office can use one internet address.
  • Incoming connections need extra rules to get to a specific device.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A small studio wanted to reach its security camera from home. It would not connect until the router was set to forward the right port number to the camera.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • A router lets 20 laptops share one address.
  • A technician forwards a port to a server.
  • A firewall table lists active conversations.

A question owners ask

Does this protect me?

It hides inside devices from direct outside contact, but a firewall does the real protecting.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
