Network-based Intrusion Prevention System

A system on the network that spots an attack in the traffic and blocks it.

Like a gate in the lobby that shuts on anyone it recognises as trouble.

How it works

  • It sits where traffic passes through.
  • It drops traffic that matches a known attack.
  • Rules are updated as new attacks appear.
  • Too strict a setting can block normal traffic.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed UniFi gateway, which has intrusion prevention built in.

  • The firewall blocks traffic that matches a known attack.
  • A monthly report counts blocked attempts.
  • A rule is relaxed after it blocked a legitimate app.

A question owners ask

Is it the same as a firewall?

Related. A basic firewall allows or blocks by address and port. This function also looks at what the traffic is doing.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
