NIDS

Network-based Intrusion Detection System

A system on the network that watches traffic passing by and alerts on anything suspicious.

Like a camera in the lobby that records everyone entering and sends an alert when a stranger appears.

How it works

  • It compares traffic against known attack patterns and unusual behaviour.
  • It alerts and leaves the response to a person.
  • It sees the whole network's traffic and misses what is encrypted end to end.
  • Many firewalls include a version.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed UniFi gateway, which has intrusion detection built in.

  • A report lists blocked and flagged events from the firewall.
  • An alert shows repeated login attempts against a server.
  • An auditor asks whether network monitoring is on.

A question owners ask

Do I need a separate box for it?

No. Small offices get it inside the firewall.

  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
