NGFW

Next-generation Firewall

A modern firewall that looks at what is inside the traffic, as well as where it comes from and where it is going.

Like a front desk that checks not only the visitor's name but also what is in their bag.

How it works

  • It understands applications, so it can allow Microsoft 365 and block a file-sharing tool.
  • It can scan for threats and block known bad sites.
  • It also keeps the traditional job of allowing or blocking by address and port.
  • It needs updates and a person watching its settings.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A six-person firm bought a firewall and left it on its default settings with no one watching the alerts. A year later it was still running an unpatched firmware version with a known flaw.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall, kept current and monitored.

  • A clinic blocks personal file sharing on staff computers while allowing its practice software.
  • An office blocks traffic to known malicious sites.
  • A retailer uses it to keep the card terminal off the guest network.

A question owners ask

Is the firewall in my internet provider's box good enough?

For one person, perhaps. A business with staff and client data benefits from a managed firewall with updates and rules.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
