Network switch

The box with many ports that connects your computers, printers and access points so they can talk to each other.

Like a power strip for data: one cable comes in, and every desk gets a socket.

How it works

  • Cables from each device plug into it.
  • Business switches can power access points and phones through the same cable (PoE).
  • Managed switches can split the network into separate sections.
  • It rarely needs attention, which is why failures are a surprise.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the firewall and switch, including keeping a managed switch's settings backed up and its firmware current.

  • A clinic runs one cable to each room from a central switch.
  • A shop adds a second switch when the first runs out of ports.
  • A studio replaces an eight-year-old switch before it fails.

A question owners ask

Can I plug the office into a cheap unmanaged switch? For a handful of desks, yes. If you need guest separation, phones or cameras, a managed switch makes that possible.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
