MTTF

Mean Time to Failure

The average time a part runs before it fails and has to be replaced.

Like the expected burn time printed on a light bulb.

How it works

  • It is used for parts that get replaced when they fail.
  • It is an average, so some fail early and some last longer.
  • Makers measure it with testing and calculations.
  • It helps plan when to replace gear.
  • A spec sheet lists it for a hard drive.
  • A planner replaces batteries on a schedule.
  • A vendor quotes it for an LED display.

A question owners ask

Is it a warranty?

No. It is an estimate for planning. Warranties and backups are what protect you.
