MMS

Multimedia Message Service

In plain language

A text message that carries a picture, video or sound clip as well as words.

The metaphor

Like a padded envelope handled by the phone company: it can carry a photo or a clip as well as a note.

Going deeper

How it works

  • Sent through the mobile carrier like a text.
  • Has size limits.
  • Is not protected end to end.
  • Phishing messages can carry links in them.
In practice
  • A tradesperson texts a photo of a job site.
  • A group message includes a short video.
  • A fake delivery message arrives with an image and a link.

A question owners ask

Is it secure for business info?

Avoid sending sensitive details this way. Use a secure messaging or email tool.
