IPSec

Internet Protocol Security

A method of scrambling and protecting traffic between two networks, often used for office-to-office VPNs.

Like an armoured pipe between two offices that nobody can see inside.

How it works

  • It protects every packet between two points.
  • Common for connecting branch offices.
  • Both sides must agree on keys and settings.
  • Misconfigured links fail in confusing ways.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the firewall that sets up and monitors these tunnels.

  • A firm links two offices over the internet.
  • A shop reaches its head-office server from a branch.
  • A provider rebuilds a tunnel after a firewall change.

A question owners ask

Is it the same as a VPN?

It is one way of building a VPN.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
