IKE

Internet Key Exchange

The conversation where two VPN devices agree on the keys and settings they will use to protect traffic.

Like two diplomats agreeing the secret code and the rules of conduct before talks begin.

How it works

  • It runs before any protected traffic flows.
  • The two ends prove who they are and exchange keys.
  • They agree on how strong the protection will be.
  • Mismatched settings on each side are the most common reason a VPN fails to connect.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall and switches that sit behind your provider's modem.

  • A new office VPN will not come up because the two sides use different settings.
  • A firewall log shows a failed negotiation.
  • A provider changes the settings after a security review.

A question owners ask

Why would a VPN fail to connect?

Often because the two ends disagree on something here, such as a password or encryption setting. Your IT provider can read the logs to find which.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
