IDS

Intrusion Detection System

A system that watches network traffic and raises an alert when it sees something suspicious.

Like a security camera on the hallway that records and sends you a message when a stranger walks by, without stopping them.

How it works

  • It compares traffic against known attack patterns and unusual behaviour.
  • It alerts; it does not block on its own.
  • Someone has to read and act on the alerts.
  • Many firewalls include a version of it.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network manages and monitors your UniFi firewall, which has intrusion detection built in, with firewall response around the clock.

  • A larger firm runs one to watch for odd traffic between offices.
  • A security report lists blocked and flagged events from the firewall.
  • An auditor asks whether alerts are being reviewed.

A question owners ask

Do I need one?

Small offices usually get this inside their firewall. The key question is who reads the alerts.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
