Firmware

The built-in software that runs a device such as a router, printer or camera.

Like the instincts built into a machine: you rarely see them, and an old set can be wrong or exploited.

How it works

  • Stored on the device itself.
  • Updated through the maker's tool or console.
  • Old versions carry known flaws.
  • Often forgotten.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the firewall and switch, including keeping their firmware current.

  • A router with firmware from 2019.
  • A printer that is never updated.
  • A camera exposed to the internet.

A question owners ask

Who updates firmware? Usually whoever manages the device. Put it on a schedule.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
