Entropic

Describes a password or key that is random and unpredictable enough to be very hard to guess.

Like a thoroughly shuffled deck of cards: there is no pattern for a guesser to follow.

How it works

  • More random characters and more length mean more unpredictability.
  • Common words, names and patterns like 1234 score low.
  • A password manager can generate long random passwords so you do not have to invent them.
  • A long phrase of unrelated words can also be strong and easier to remember.
  • A manager generates a 20-character random password for a bank login.
  • A staff member replaces a pet's name and birth year with a random phrase.
  • A security training session compares weak and strong passwords.

A question owners ask

What makes a password strong?

Length and randomness. A long, random password kept in a password manager beats a short one you try to remember.
