End of support

The date a maker stops updating a product, after which new security holes stay open.

Like a product recall that never gets a repair: the maker stops fixing it, and the flaws stay.

How it works

  • Windows, Office, routers and phones all have end dates.
  • After the date there are no more security patches.
  • Insurers and clients may ask about unsupported systems.
  • Plan replacements before the date.

How WILDCARD handles it

Patch Management flags devices on an operating system past end of support, because there is nothing left to patch. A vCIO roadmap plans replacements.

  • A PC that still runs Windows 7 for one old program.
  • A printer whose firmware is no longer updated.
  • A phone that no longer gets security updates.

A question owners ask

Can I keep using an unsupported computer? Keeping it off the network or fully isolated lowers the risk. A plan to replace it is the real answer.
