DNAT

Destination Network Address Translation

A firewall rule that redirects traffic arriving at your public address to a specific device inside the office.

Like a front desk that receives every delivery and walks it to the right office.

How it works

  • Traffic arrives at the public address and port.
  • The rule sends it to an inside device.
  • Used for cameras and servers.
  • Each forward opens a door that attackers can find.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

An office forwarded a port to a camera recorder with a default password. Attackers found it within days and used it to view the feeds.

How WILDCARD handles it

Network covers the managed firewall where these rules are set and reviewed.

  • A server is reachable from the internet.
  • A camera recorder is forwarded.
  • A review removes forwards nobody needs.

A question owners ask

Is it safe?

Each forward is a door. Prefer a VPN for access.

Network
  • Firewall managed and monitored
  • Switches kept current
  • On-prem Active Directory auth
