Virtual Desktop Environment

In plain language

A full computer desktop that runs in a data centre and that you reach from any device.

The metaphor

Like renting a desk in a remote office that you operate by remote control.

Going deeper

How it works

  • Your device shows the screen.
  • The work runs on a server elsewhere.
  • Files stay in the data centre.
  • Needs a good internet connection.
In practice
  • Staff open a work desktop from a home laptop.
  • A contractor gets a temporary desktop.
  • A business keeps files off personal laptops.

A question owners ask

Is it worth it?

It suits teams with many remote users or sensitive files. For most small offices, a standard laptop is simpler.
