Personal Electronic Device

Any small personal gadget such as a phone, tablet, smartwatch or e-reader that can hold or share data.

Like the things a visitor carries into a building that security may want to check.

How it works

  • They can take photos, record audio and copy files.
  • Many work policies cover what is allowed in sensitive areas.
  • Lost ones can expose company data.
  • Controls such as passcodes and remote wipe reduce the risk.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A staff member's tablet with client files was left on a train. With no passcode, the files could be opened by anyone who found it.

  • A law firm bans phones in a records room.
  • A company requires passcodes on any device with email.
  • A clinic limits devices in treatment areas.

A question owners ask

What is the simplest rule?

Require a passcode and the ability to wipe a lost device before it holds any work data.
