MX record

In plain language

The line in your domain's settings that tells the world where to deliver your email.

The metaphor

Like the forwarding address you give the post office: change it by mistake and the mail goes to the wrong building.

Going deeper

How it works

  • Lives in your domain's DNS.
  • Points to Microsoft 365, Google or another mail service.
  • A wrong edit stops mail arriving.
  • Changes take a while to spread.

How WILDCARD handles it

Domain Security holds your DNS records, including MX, so a web move cannot knock the email offline.

In practice
  • Email stops after a website move.
  • A new mail provider needs new MX records.
  • Mail goes to an old provider.

A question owners ask

How do I check my MX record? A DNS lookup tool shows it. Ask before you change it.
