Industrial Control Systems

The computers and controllers that run physical equipment, such as factory machines, pumps and building controls.

Like the nervous system of a plant, telling each machine what to do and reporting back.

How it works

  • It links sensors, controllers and a screen where an operator watches the process.
  • It was built for reliability and long life, with little thought for security.
  • Many run old software that cannot be easily updated.
  • Connecting it to the office network can expose machinery to office threats.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A small manufacturer connected its packaging line controller to the office network for remote help. A virus on an office laptop spread to the controller and stopped the line for two days.

  • A bottling plant runs its line from a control panel.
  • A building uses a control system for heating and ventilation.
  • A water utility monitors pumps remotely.

A question owners ask

Does my office have one?

Only if you run machinery or building systems on a network, such as a factory line or automated heating. If you do, ask your provider to keep it separate from office devices.
