Contingency Planning

A plan for how the business keeps working when something unexpected happens.

Like the emergency kit and exit plan kept by the door of a building.

How it works

  • Lists what could go wrong, such as a fire, outage or attack.
  • Decides the first steps and who takes them.
  • Includes contact lists and backup locations.
  • Gets tested so it works on a bad day.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A shop's card machine lost its connection on a busy Saturday. Staff had no written plan and turned customers away, while the shop next door switched to a backup connection.

How WILDCARD handles it

vCIO helps write and test the plan, and Unified Backups keeps copies of your data ready to restore.

  • A one-page plan lists who to call when the internet is down.
  • A backup phone line is kept for emergencies.
  • The plan is reviewed after a real outage.

A question owners ask

How long should the plan be?

Short enough that people read it. One or two pages with names and phone numbers is better than a binder nobody opens.
