OTA

Over the Air

In plain language

Sending updates or settings to a phone or device wirelessly, with no cable needed.

The metaphor

Like a radio station broadcasting a new schedule to every receiver at once.

Going deeper

How it works

  • The maker or carrier pushes the update to each device.
  • It is used by phones, routers, cars and smart gadgets.
  • The device verifies the update before installing it.
  • Rollouts are usually staged over days.

How WILDCARD handles it

Mobile Management is a planned card for managing company phones and tablets.

In practice
  • A phone installs a monthly security update overnight.
  • A company pushes a Wi-Fi profile to every staff phone.
  • A router updates its own firmware.

A question owners ask

Are automatic updates safe?

Yes, when they come from the maker. They close known holes, so leave them on.
